Did you buy it? Doubtful.

A while back (and I mean a while back) I joined forces with fellow artist Scott Hume to put together a book that housed previews of books we were working on at the time that both featured Zombies. Called "The Family feast Edition" It put together Unfed and Zombilly (Scott's rockabilly zombie story) we sold it at the Toronto Comic Convention I guess two years ago now. I created one new piece of art for the project and I'm posting it here for the first time seen outside of the actual book (which had maybe 30 copies tops)whether Scott likes it or not haha. The image in question features Steven just kinda freaked out with Vinnie the scumbag musician. The story in the comic was the 6 page preview comic from the end of school. When are you gonna see that preview? Sooner than you think...

Here's that art:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 265px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uBgjSPWLqgI/SarHa1iZEgI/AAAAAAAAAKM/FcNAfjX0t0U/s320/COVER.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308274374671405570" />
Scott's art blog can be seen in the links on the side there. Although there's been nothing new going on this blog, that doesn't mean I haven't been thinking of this project at all. As a matter of fact, I reread the second (Actually 25th) issue's script just today and man, did that relight the fire. There's actually been a few things that have led to my interest returning highly in this. First off, a conversation with another artist telling me he wanted to see some work from me printed in book form. I then showed him the six page Unfed promo comic that I made with the finish of my course.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uBgjSPWLqgI/SaHedKf2gwI/AAAAAAAAAKE/honzW0lURCo/s320/2009-02-11-05351.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5305766428634678018" />
Sending him the pdf of it and he read it offering this delightful review of the material: "Well, that was a fucking cock tease. your comic teased my cock." Comments like that kinda renew interest. Also someone read the actual physical copy I hold in my sweaty hands up there and they had a similar, if less profane review. There's also something about having a book with your work in it that looks so nice too. So I will be updating some material in the coming weeks. Rather than just blow my wad in one go, I'll take some time with it, so now, I will update anything I happen to have on Sundays. Why Sundays? I dunno, it's just a week from today, which is when I happened to post this. Will you see HUGE Jumps in the making of this? Probably not, but hey, if I can even keep a single sketch up a week that's a step in making this project. And that's a good thing.

So till next week... um... eat brains?

The Cover

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_uBgjSPWLqgI/Rhze8oRBdHI/AAAAAAAAACA/xhxFCjJVuYQ/s320/cover-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5052158015185187954" />
Hey look! First up, a new sketch of Don, Steven's boss. I like the way his design looks. I might make his eyes a little more beady. He's supposed to be kind of a super jerk.

Also at the bottom there is the Uniform for the unbelievably creative name of Unfed's fast food restaurant "Coffee n' Donuts." Awesome. There will be a colour test for it later in the week.

Finally, the New character. ANDREA. What is with me and that name? There's an Andrea in MSC (who this character is not based on), and I know like three of them. Anyways, here's Andrea. The script describes her as "so freaking hot Don let's her get away with wearing her uniform not to standard so he can check her out". What a perv that Don is. I kinda based her one that one girl, you know, the one at work you secretly like but never ask her out because she's too busy telling you stories of her sexual exploits. Huzzah. Anyway, expect more during the week.
<img style="float:center; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uBgjSPWLqgI/RfwQQESmxaI/AAAAAAAAABk/2C4mcBl0rsU/s320/zombie9.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5042923550963844514" />

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://unfed.blogspot.com/2007/03/new-art-new-character.html' title='New Art! This time it's time for some live mofos.

First up Steven. Steven's the main character. He's essentially a really cocky guy. He's funny, but also a jerk. The kind of guy you like to have at work, but not around your friends. Even though he's supposed to be kind of a higher up in his job I made him rather slacky. Note the untucked shirt. Buttons undone. I still need to come up with a uniform for the coffee shop they work out of. I also decided to make him kind of thin. Lanky even. He's not fat but he sure isn't athletic.

Next we have Don. He's that big bristly mustached bastard up there. He's Steven's boss and a real hot head. I wanted to make him that "boss" we all have had. Short sleeved collared shirt. Tie. Bad comb over. Scott suggested to me that I make him sweat profusely. I'm putting a shirt pocket with a big ol hankey in it for him to wipe his forehead with. More sketches as they come.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uBgjSPWLqgI/ReZMGyCVyGI/AAAAAAAAABA/tOUEZXJI-ds/s320/zombie5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036796912654993506" />

To get you in the mood...

This is an excerpt from World War Z by Max Brooks. I did some sketching of some zombies. I tried to make them less... I dunno rotted? The point in the story I'm drawing for the sample is pretty early in the Zombie attack, so really, the damage to them wouldn't be much. I did a desktop background of some zombies a while back, but they were all pretty decayed. The point of these sketches were to try and make them instantly recognizable as zombies without the gaping wounds in the face or with limbs missing. These are just really rough at the moment so try to enjoy anyway.

Also, I've already had a few requests for people to be zombies that appear in Unfed. Now as I'm sure you saw as soon as you got here the logo's at the top of the blog, rather than at the bottom. Seriously. At the bottom? What the hell was I thinking. I wasn't that's for sure. There's some new links along the side too, one of which I'm sure will ruffle someone's feathers (who oh whoever could that be?). More at some point. I go to New York this upcoming week so I'm sure I'll have something done at some point or another upon my return. And I'm about to start the meat of the project, the six pager anyway. Let's get to know each other. Dinner and a movie?

Okay, if you've just stumbled into this or you've only read the first post or whatever, you've got to be scratching your heads.

"What the hell is Unfed?"

Well like I said. It's a comic. About Zombies, and the people who're trying not to be eaten by them. Sounds wholesome I know. I know what some of you are saying, Zombies are so cliche. Hey, I'm inclined to agree with you on that front. How many zombie films have hit in the last few years? Hell, how many are going to hit in the next few?

So what the hell's so different about Unfed? Why should you even care? Let's examine the biggest cliche in zombie lore. The job. What did the main character do for a living? What did the second main character do? Chances are they were a cop. Or a doctor. Or a military strategist or some other damn thing that assures they have an advantage in the world of the damned over most people because they have a background that provides a useful skill set.

Not in Unfed they don't. The main characters in Unfed are regular joes just like you and me. They don't know how to load a gun or know how to set a broken leg. They don't have the skills to keep them alive. Hell, will they be alive by the end of the story?

More info on Unfed will be unveiled in the coming weeks, and now that you know at least the theme of the story hopefully you'll come back soon to learn more about it as it comes.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://unfed.blogspot.com/2007/02/so-lets-get-to-know-each-other-dinner.html' title='So. A zombie comic the three of us would write and produce together. Well, somehow, it fell through. I kept my notes for the project though.

Flash forward to last November. I had a writing assignment in my class. Write a 22 pg original script. I took those back burner ideas and popped them into a story I called Unfed. 22 pgs later I had something on my hands. An itch that I had scratched. And I needed to itch it more.

Several people in the class read the script quickly falling in love with it. I decided that I wanted to produce this script as an actual book, to sell at conventions and through my website.

As it turns out, we have a project, a summative project that we have to write, draw, ink, and colour. I decided to do "Unfed: The Taste Test", as my project. It will be six pages from the Unfed script I've submitted already. This blog's been set up to record my progress on not only the six pager, but the 22 pager which hopefully will be available for sale later on this year. So check back often and I'll show you some sketches, pages, Script notes, whatever I think will hype up the story.

Enjoyyyyyyy....urrr brains.....
